Jail Facility Overview in Maricopa County

The Maricopa County Jail System comprises five jails and a designated processing facility with short-term housing. The largest jail is the Lower Buckeye Jail, with an estimated capacity of 2,427. This facility houses sentenced and non-sentenced inmates, most of whom are male. Female inmates and juveniles are housed separately.

Conversely, the Fourth Avenue Jail is a strictly male-population facility with over 2,000 beds. It is also the most secure jail in the system, with 288 cells specifically reserved for sentenced inmates with the highest security classification. Other county jails include Watkins Jail, Towers Jail, and Estrella Jail (the designated jail for female inmates).

Additionally, the Intake Transfer and Release (ITC) is a processing facility with an attached housing area called the 512 Facility. This center may accommodate about 512 inmates, but serves as a temporary holding facility that houses inmates for a few days, usually not more than 5 days.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Maricopa County Jail?

Generally, Maricopa County jail facilities have kiosks in the main lobby where people may deposit money into an inmate's account. Payments here are made through vendors or service providers approved by the facility (Touchpay). Interested persons may fund accounts at the kiosk with cash or a card upon providing the required information, like the inmate's booking number or name.

Alternatively, family and friends may also send money to an inmate by calling the toll-free number 1-866-355-9593 or using approved channels online. Interested persons may also fund an inmate's tablet using these channels.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

Maricopa County has an organised jail system operated by the county Sheriff's Office. This agency offers individuals a single site to view bookings or perform searches for inmates housed in any facility.

However, to find persons housed by other federal, state, or local bodies within the county, like the BOP, ADCRR, Mesa Police Department, persons should use the inmate search tools provided by the agency or contact the facility directly.

Maricopa County Visitation Rules and Schedules

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office requires persons who want to visit inmates in any county jail to register for video visits through the approved service provider. Attorneys and other professionals who want to have unrecorded visits also go to the MCSO Visitation Center for verification.

Registered family and friends may use the platform to schedule and receive remote video visits for $0.25 per minute. Inmates may also initiate visits at any time with the platform's features. The Sheriff's Office may also permit onsite video visits.

All inmates and visitors must keep the MCSO visit rules, which include:

  • Visits may be between 7 am and 9:30 pm daily
  • Each session may last up to 30 minutes
  • Persons should follow the dress code and remain fully dressed throughout the visit
  • The use of other recording or electronic devices is forbidden
  • No intoxication, drug use, or display of alcohol or drugs
  • An adult must accompany visitors under 18 years of age
  • Friends and family may only create one account and must use their own account
  • Non-privileged or non-professional visits are subject to recording and monitoring.

Excluding legal mail, all mail should be standard postcards and be in line with the MCSO standards, which include:

  • Inmates may receive a maximum of 5 photographs at a time, with dimensions not more than 4 by 6 inches
  • Each photograph must have only the inmate's name and booking number written on the back
  • These photographs must be the only content in an envelope marked "Photographs".
  • Paperback books, magazines, and newspapers must be bought straight from a publisher.
  • Every book must have an invoice or a shipping manifest attached.
  • Photographs and books depicting violence, criminal activity, or nudity are forbidden.
  • The MCSO will notify inmates of unacceptable mail, but shall not give it to the inmates.

Inmates may purchase and pay for commissary items and packages with their accounts. The MCSO does not specify a procedure to gift packages to inmates, but family and friends may order online through a service provider or fund inmates' accounts to allow them to do this themselves.
